The four workshops are a linked series, with templates, learning aids and assistance that will lead you through the process of establishing a business.

Alternatively if you are already part way through the process then individual workshops can be selected for those elements that still require refinement.

The series will give you the tools you need to take your idea from the drawing board to starting up the business:

Workshop 1

Setting the Scene:

This session is all about preparation and considering the implications of self-employment and running a business.   You can ask questions which you haven't been able to find the answers to. AND talk to people who, like you are thinking about starting a business.
 
Content:
The workshop will help you discover:
  • If running a business is right for you
  • What you want to achieve from self -employment
  • What type of business do you want / can you start
  • Will you start a new business, buy an established business, buy a franchise - the options, risks and rewards?
  • Your personal survival financial requirements
  • Testing the market
  • What is a marketing plan
  • What is a sales plan
  • The viability of your ideas
  • Potential problems
There will be templates provided together with examples, in the form of a workbook that can be completed for your business ideas.

Workshop 2

Answer the questions - developing the marketing plan

This session is mainly about marketing - what will you sell, to whom, at what price and will they buy?

Content:
To start we shall review the "homework" on survival budget. We will then help you to prepare a marketing plan to identify and define:
  • Carry out market research
  • Interpret the results
  • Who can you sell to
  • How to price the product
  • Know the competition
  • SWOT analysis - yours and the competition
  • Prepare the plan itself - using SMART objectives
There will be templates provided together with examples, in the form of a workbook that can be completed for your marketing plan.

Workshop 3

Financial fundamentals - sourcing and managing the money:

This session is mainly about finances, giving you an invaluable insight into financial issues, guidance on how to successfully manage them and make a profit.

Content:
To start we shall review the "homework" completing the marketing plan. The workshop will then help you to prepare a financial plan to identify and define:
  • development of the sales plan
  • how much do you have to earn?
  • how you will fund the business?
  • build confidence with financial terminology
  • calculate the business income
  • calculate the business expenditure
  • understand the difference between profit and cash flow
  • preparation of financial forecasts
  • applying for business loans
  • book-keeping and financial records
There will be templates provided together with examples, in the form of a workbook that can be completed for your cash flow and profit forecast.

Workshop 4

Practicalities and legalities & finish with a plan:

This session is mainly about the daily practicalities of setting up the business and complying with legislation - it may be boring but vital to get it right.

Content:
To start we shall review the "homework" completing the financial forecasts. The workshop will then help you to prepare the business plan to identify and define:
  • Legal forms of business
  • Registering your business with HMRC
  • Setting your business up for online VAT, PAYE etc
  • Income tax, VAT and National Insurance
  • Premises
  • Insurances
  • Health & safety
  • Employment
  • ICT
  • The business plan
  • Funding proposals
There will be templates provided together with examples, in the form of a workbook that can be completed for your business plan.
